Former Las Vegas teacher gets 9 years in prison for distributing child pornography

A Las Vegas man who worked as a second-grade teacher will serve nine years in prison for distributing images and videos of child sexual abuse, according to federal prosecutors.

A U.S. district court judge on Monday sentenced Alexander Scott Derringer, 38, after he pleaded guilty to one count of distributing child pornography, the U.S. attorney’s office in Nevada said in a statement.

Authorities said Derringer shared more than 130 files through two accounts on the Kik mobile app over several months in 2021.

Of these files, approximately 59 were found on two of his cell phones. They were among 2,584 images and 269 videos of child pornography found on the two devices, with minors as young as infants.

Henderson police arrested Derringer in 2022 after receiving guidance from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. According to the group, an individual using an IP address linked to Derringer’s home downloaded and shared the material.

He admitted to using Kik to chat with people, but denied viewing or possessing child pornography, Henderson police wrote in an arrest report.

Derringer previously worked at Farron Elementary School from 2015 to 2021. He had been working at Coral Academy of Science in Las Vegas for about eight days when he was arrested, and the school said his contract was terminated on same day.

“Mr. Derringer abused his position of public trust to prey on those we expected him to protect,” said Spencer L. Evans, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI’s Las Vegas Division. , in a press release. “Every time child pornography is viewed on the Internet, a child is re-victimized. Child sexual exploitation is one of the most notorious crimes we investigate, and today’s conviction is a reminder that the FBI and its partners will work tirelessly to protect children from abuse and exploitation.

In addition to his prison sentence, Derringer will have to serve 20 years of supervised release.
