Former Las Vegas teacher sentenced to nine years in prison for sharing child pornography on social media

LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – A former Las Vegas second grade teacher has been sentenced to nine years in prison for sharing child pornography.

According to court documents, Alexander Scott Derringer, 38, distributed more than 130 digital files known as CSAM through the social media app Kik.

Authorities reported that Derringer pleaded guilty to one count of child pornography in June 2024.

U.S. District Judge James C. Mahan also sentenced Derringer to 20 years of supervised release.

The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children received two tips claiming an IP address linked to Derringer’s home was found sharing images and videos of child sexual abuse.

Reports confirm the center shared this advice with the Henderson Police Department.

Police later identified Derringer.

“Mr. Derringer abused his position of public trust to prey on those we expected him to protect,” said Special Agent in Charge Spencer L. Evans of the FBI’s Las Vegas Division. “Every time child pornography is viewed on the Internet, it re-victimizes a child. Child sexual exploitation is among the most unscrupulous crimes we investigate, and today’s conviction is a reminder that the FBI and its partners will work tirelessly to protect children from abuse and exploitation.

The United States Attorney for the District of Nevada said the FBI-led Child Exploitation Task Force includes various agencies, including the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, the North Las Vegas Police Department, the Henderson Police Department, the Nevada AG Office and Homeland Security Investigations.

These agencies worked together to investigate this matter.

Officials said it was important to seek justice to maintain the mission of a national initiative, Project Safe Childhood.

The initiative aims to combat the sexual exploitation of children since May 2006.
