Felon Sentenced to 8 Years in Federal Prison for Rockford Handgun Arrest

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) – Tyrone Smith, 37, was sentenced to eight years in federal prison for being a felon in unlawful possession of a handgun.

According to the U.S. Department of Justice, Smith was arrested in Rockford in September 2022 when police discovered he was in possession of a firearm containing 13 rounds of ammunition.

Smith pleaded guilty to the charge earlier this year and was sentenced Tuesday.

He is currently incarcerated in the Winnebago County Jail on additional charges of home invasion, robbery and battery.
