Court dismisses Alex Murdaugh’s appeal of 40-year sentence for financial crimes

The Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals granted the government’s motion Tuesday to dismiss convicted killer Alex Murdaugh’s appeal of his federal sentence for financial crimes.

In the order, the three-judge panel concluded Murdaugh knowingly and voluntarily waived his right to appeal after reviewing the record and both sides’ submissions.

US District Judge Richard M. Gergel convicted killer Murdaugh to 40 years for financial crimes on April 1 at a courthouse in Charleston. Murdaugh’s attorneys filed the appeal shortly after the disgraced former was sentenced in April.

Murdaugh was also ordered to pay $8,762,731.88 in restitution and $10,034,377.95 in forfeiture.

United States Attorney for the District of South Carolina Adair Boroughs filed a motion Aug. 8 seeking the court to dismiss his appeal.
