Alabama Secretary of State Wes Allen responds to Justice Department lawsuit

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WAFF) – Alabama’s Secretary of State responded to questions Tuesday regarding a Department of Justice lawsuit over a program removing voters from voter rolls.

Wes Allen spoke to a group of Republican women in Huntsville Tuesday morning. His appearance comes days after the Justice Department alleged that Allen’s decision to remove noncitizens from the rolls violated the Voting Rights Act.

According to the lawsuits, this decision affected approximately three voters.

“I can say it is my constitutional duty to ensure that only American citizens vote in our Alabama elections and that is what we have done since day one,” Allen said.

DOJ lawyers asked the court to enjoin the state from “failing to comply with this section in the future.”
