Death of a 28-year-old death row inmate

September 30 — Garcia Glen White, 60, is scheduled to be executed by the Texas Department of Criminal Justice after living behind bars for 28 years.

White is scheduled to be put to death on Tuesday, October 2 at 6 p.m. at the Huntsville Unit in Huntsville, Texas. Death row executions are scheduled by the Harris County sentencing court in this case.

White was convicted of murdering Bonita Edwards and her twin daughters, Bernette and Annette, in 1989. White was using cocaine with Edwards when they began arguing. White told detectives that when she reached for a knife, he grabbed it and killed her.

The 16-year-old twins heard the fighting and came out of their room. White said he chased them through the bedroom, killing one in the bedroom and the other in the living room. The girls had celebrated their birthday the day before.

The three bodies, in various states of undress, were riddled with stab wounds, according to court documents. Authorities said Bernette was sexually assaulted.

Their murders remained unsolved for six years before an informant told police that White had confessed to killing the mother and twins. White was arrested the next day in July 1995.

Court records report that White initially denied involvement, but later submitted to a video interview during which he confessed to an unrelated murder involving another suspect, as well as at least two other killings.

White was convicted of capital murder in the Edwards case in July 1996. Two years later, the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals upheld White’s conviction and sentence on direct appeal. Several requests for habeas corpus and other legal measures have failed, the last in 2011.

White confessed to killing five people in three separate incidents. Greta Williams, 27, was the first; White said he beat her to death in 1989. The Edwards family murders occurred a few months later. He was arrested after what he called his final murder, that of Hai Pham, a convenience store employee, who was beaten to death.

White was never convicted of the murders of Williams and Pham.
