Rs 40 lakh looted from bank in broad daylight robbery

During a broad daylight robbery at Axis Bank’s Shamli branch, a man armed with two pistols stormed the bank and threatened the branch manager, demanding Rs 40 lakh.

The incident unfolded in dramatic fashion when the perpetrator pointed a gun at the manager’s head, warning him that if the money was not handed over he would be shot. The thief even claimed that he needed the money to repay a loan.

When the bank security guard tried to intervene, the branch manager, fearing for his life, asked him to step aside.

The frightened manager then ordered the cashier to bring Rs 40 lakh. The armed robber held staff at gunpoint, forcing them to the bank entrance and made everyone else in the bank raise their hands. Without even bothering to hide his face, the thief calmly got out and fled the scene on a motorbike.

The robbery took place around 2:27 p.m. at the Axis Bank branch near Dhimanpura railway gate in the Kotwali area of the city. The thief entered the principal’s room, guns in hand, and showed the principal a suicide note, stating that he had a debt of Rs 40 lakh and would be ruined if he did not repay it.

He threatened to either kill the manager or commit suicide if the money was not provided.

The manager, complying with the demands, asked the cashier Rohit to bring the cash to his office. The robber put the money in a bag, forced bank staff to escort him to the door at gunpoint, then fled on a bicycle while waiting for him.

Interestingly, the robber spent around 30 minutes inside the bank, but neither the staff nor the customers (around 18-20 people) raised the alarm or contacted the police during the robbery. After the thief fled, senior officers, including Shamli SP Ram Sewak Gautam, arrived at the spot. They collected CCTV footage and formed teams to track down the culprit.

A bank employee, Bobby, responsible for handling cash deliveries, claimed he was drinking water at the time of the robbery. He tried to aim at the robber, but the agency director ordered him to put down his gun. According to Bobby, the robber fled on his bike as soon as he put his gun back in his bag. The police are investigating this matter further.
