Driver of stolen car charged with hit-and-run

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) — An 18-year-old in a stolen car was arrested Sunday after a hit-and-run while fleeing police.

According to the Rockford Police Department, officers with the Specialized Community Oriented Policing Team (SCOPE) arrested Cervantez Barringer, 18, near Rockton Avenue and Whitman Street around 10:55 p.m.

Police said Barringer took off in the car, which later turned out to be stolen, and struck a truck on School Street. Barringer then fled the scene of the accident on foot and was apprehended a short time later.

He was charged with unlawful possession of a stolen vehicle, aggravated flight to elude, possession of burglary tools, criminal damage to property, resisting arrest, possession of ammunition, hit and run and suspended driver’s license.

He was booked into the Winnebago County Jail.
