Bills quarterback Josh Allen, a positive team member, will benefit from ugly Week 4 loss

Week 4 is one that the Buffalo Bills will quickly want to forget.

The team seemed lifeless across vast expanses of its Sunday Night Football battle against the Baltimore Ravens, allowing nearly 300 yards of offense in the first half as the AFC North team took an early 21-3 lead. The Bills showed some energy in the third quarter and had a chance to bring the game back to within one score before quickly letting their momentum return via self-inflicted wounds; Buffalo ultimately lost 35-10, its first regular season loss by multiple possessions since 2021.

All hope is not lost, as the Bills still lead their division with an impressive 3-1 record; That said, their first loss of the young campaign certainly served as a sudden return to Earth. Quarterback Josh Allen didn’t play badly in the loss, but it wasn’t the MVP-caliber performance that fans have become accustomed to early in the season; he spoke with reporters after the 35-10 loss, sharing some positives the team can build on moving forward.

“Not everything was bad about this game,” Allen said. “I don’t want us to come away from this situation saying, ‘We’re the worst.’ Lots to learn. I’m glad this happened early in the season so we could put things right.

Allen noting that the timing of the loss is important, as there is still a lot of football remaining to be played. Playoff spots and championships are not won or won in September; teams around the league are still discovering their identity and gelling, and while Buffalo’s Week 4 loss is far from desirable, this adversity could ultimately benefit the team assuming they view it as a learning opportunity.

That’s exactly what the Bills plan to do, according to Allen.

“There’s a lot to learn,” Allen said. “We’re going to watch this tape, learn from it, dump it and move on to the next one.”

Losses are dangerous unless appropriate lessons are learned from them, as they tend to permeate a team’s mind and cause them to overthink their strategy or capabilities. Allen is confident Buffalo won’t allow that to happen, citing the general character present at One Bills Drive.

“The guys that make up this locker room understand who we are (and) what we are about,” Allen said. “We are not going to let this avalanche pass. The guys we have in this building are smart, they’re guys who have played a lot of football in their careers. They understand the ebbs and flows of an NFL season. It’s going to happen from time to time, sometimes you walk into a building and it’s a buzzsaw tonight. They kicked our butts, that’s what it comes down to.

The Bills will have their next opportunity to get back in the win column when they visit Stefon Diggs and the Houston Texans in Week 5.
