Man sentenced to 14 years in prison for sexually abusing child at Fort Carson

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) – The United States Attorney’s Office for the District of Colorado (U.S. Attorney) announced that a man was sentenced to 168 months in prison and 12 years of supervised release after being convicted by a federal jury charged him with three counts of sexual abuse of a minor.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office says Mitchel Crow, 32, engaged in multiple sexual acts with a minor at a residence in Fort Carson. Crow was a civilian living on post and was responsible for caring for the child at the time.

“There is nothing more important than protecting children in our society,” said Matt Kirsch, Acting United States Attorney for the District of Colorado. “This long sentence reflects the seriousness of the abuse committed by the defendant against a minor he was supposed to protect.”

“Child sex offenders prey on the most vulnerable victims. This sentence will not erase the harm inflicted on the victim, but we hope it is a step toward recovery,” said Special Agent in Charge from the FBI in Denver, Mark Michalek. “The FBI and our law enforcement partners, such as the U.S. Army Criminal Investigation Division, will continue to work together to put predators who prey on children in prison.”

This case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a national initiative launched in May 2006 by the Department of Justice to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse. Led by the United States Attorney’s Offices and the Criminal Division’s Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section, Project Safe Childhood brings together federal, state, and local resources to locate, apprehend, and prosecute individuals who sexually exploit children, and to identify and rescue victims.
