Seven people are in custody for alleged trafficking in precious metals and illegal possession of precious metals worth more than R300 million.

The arrests of the suspects, aged between 34 and 67, were made on Wednesday by the Hawks and other SAPS units in Rustenburg and Brits.

“Their arrest follows information received regarding the theft of material suspected to be platinum group from a mine in Rustenburg.

“The allegedly stolen platinum was being held in Rustenburg and Brits for sale,” a spokesperson said.

According to the Hawks, the raids were carried out simultaneously in two separate locations.
