The priority of the fight against the sexual exploitation of children: PPATK

Jakarta (ANTARA) –
Indonesia’s Financial Transaction Analysis and Reporting Center (PPATK) said combating child sexual exploitation crimes was one of its priorities.

“This is reflected in the close cooperation between PPATK and the Indonesian Child Protection Commission (KPAI) through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to combat sexual crimes against minors,” PPATK member Natsir Kongah said in a statement received here on Wednesday.

He made the statement while delivering a presentation at the ASEAN Conference on Preventing and Responding to Abuse by Financial Service Providers in Child Sexual Exploitation, held in Bali on August 7-8.

So far this year, there have been 303 cases of economic and sexual exploitation of children, 128 cases of child trafficking and 481 cases of child pornography in Indonesia, Kongah said.

In addition, 24,000 children aged 10 to 18 were victims of child prostitution, with associated financial transactions reaching 130,000 and total revenue reaching 127 billion rupees, or approximately 7.9 million US dollars.

According to Kongah, PPATK’s efforts to combat child sexual exploitation also span Southeast Asia, Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific region.

At the Financial Intelligence Advisory Group (FICG) meeting in Melbourne, Australia in May 2024, a PPATK delegation submitted a proposal to establish a red flag for suspicious financial transactions.

The proposal was approved and is now part of the FICG’s strategic projects for 2024-2025.

The first draft of the warning indicators document is expected to be completed in November 2024.

Child sexual exploitation has a truly destructive impact and threatens the country’s next generation.

Interpol data from June revealed that 69 countries are linked to the child sexual exploitation network.

Therefore, Kongah said, forums such as the ASEAN Conference are essential to strengthen the commitment of all parties in the fight against crime.
