60-year-old man dies in Dublin bank holiday cycling accident as police launch major public appeal

A man in his 60s has died following a horrific bicycle collision in Dublin.

Gardai have this morning confirmed they are investigating the single vehicle road collision which took place on the Ticknock Road in County Dublin.

The man unfortunately lost his life in the accident yesterday afternoon.

Emergency services were alerted to the collision and attended the scene of the tragedy shortly after 2pm yesterday.

The man, who was a cyclist, was taken to St. Vincent University Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

An autopsy will be performed at a later date.

A technical examination of the scene on Ticknock Road has been carried out and the road has been reopened to traffic after being closed for a short period yesterday.

The Garai have urged anyone who may have information to come forward.

In a statement this morning, a Garda spokesman said: “The Garda appeals for any witnesses to this collision to come forward.

“Any road users who may have camera footage (including dash cam) and who were travelling in the Ticknock Road area between 1.45pm and 2pm are asked to make this footage available to the Gardaí.

“Anyone with information is asked to contact Blackrock Police Station on 01 6665200, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111 or any police station.”

Separately, a man in his twenties died in an accident involving a van and a truck shortly before 6am yesterday.

Gardaí and emergency services rushed to the scene on the N15 at Urlar, Drumcliffe, Co Sligo, where the van and a lorry collided.

The driver and sole occupant of the van, a man in his twenties, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The truck driver was taken to Sligo University Hospital for assessment and his injuries are believed to be non-life threatening.

A Garda spokesman said: “Gardaí are appealing for witnesses following a fatal road traffic collision in County Sligo on Sunday 4th August 2024.

“Gardaí and emergency services responded to a collision between a van and a lorry shortly after 6am this morning on the N15 at Urlar, Drumcliffe, County Sligo.

“The driver and sole occupant of the van, a man in his twenties, was pronounced dead at the scene.

“The truck driver was taken to Sligo University Hospital for assessment. His injuries are not life-threatening.”

The collision scene has been preserved for forensic examination and diversions have been put in place between Drumcliffe and Grange.

Gardaí said: “Gardaí are appealing for witnesses. They are also seeking any road users with camera footage, including dash cam footage, who were travelling between Drumcliffe and Grange at the time of the collision to make this available.
