City Doctor Duped by Fake Cops, CBI Agents

Bombay: Cyber ​​crookspretending to be police officers and CBI Officers extorted Rs 23 lakh from a city ​​doctor threatening to arrest him in a case of money laundering, drug trafficking and identity theft.
The doctor, a consultant at a city hospital in his 60s, told police that he received a WhatsApp call from a person “from the telecom department” who said illegal activities had been carried out using his phone and that the number would be disconnected in an hour. He then put him in touch with “a Delhi police officer” who told the doctor that a case had been registered against him.
The fake cop suggested the doctor to speak to a “CBI officer in police uniform” who made a video call and asked the doctor that a “serious” case which he termed as “money laundering, drug peddling and identity theft of Sandeep Kumar” was registered against him. The doctor was threatened with arrest. The accused sent him a letter on a fake CBI letterhead via WhatsApp regarding a “confidentiality agreement”.
The accused sent a confirmation letter to the complainant, in which the names of an IAS and two IPS officers were mentioned. The accused asked the doctor to transfer Rs 23 lakhs to an account number.
The accused told the doctor that his money would be returned to him once the judgment was pronounced. The accused was monitoring his activities through the video call, the complainant told the police. He sent Rs 23 lakhs to the given account number and later realised that he had been cheated. A fraud complaint has been filed.
