South Carolina has one of the highest crime rates in the United States, according to a new report. Here’s where it ranks and why

A national study of FBI statistics and local government spending found that South Carolina had the third highest crime rate based on the amount spent on police.

South Carolina has 111 crimes for every $1,000 spent on police, nearly double the national average of 66. The worst state is Nebraska, followed by Arkansas. The best return on investment is New York.

Pre-settlement legal financing firm High Rise Financial studied how effectively money spent on law enforcement deters crime, particularly violent and property crimes.

“States were ranked based on the number of crimes committed per $1,000 of government spending on policing,” the company said.

South Carolina ranks ninth in the nation in crime rates, with 2,920 crimes per 100,000 residents. The state spends $26.2 million to fight crime.

The national average investment in law enforcement was $40 million.

Other states ranked were Oklahoma 4th, New Mexico 5th, Washington 6th, Louisiana 7th, Tennessee 8th, Utah 9th and Colorado 10th.

In New York, there are 25 crimes for every $1,000 spent by police.
